Our 2012 Scholar Angie DeWalt is starting her junior year at the University of Houston. Angie plans to graduate in 2016 with a degree in chemistry and then continue to follow her dreams by becoming and Optometrist.
During the 2014 summer break she worked at Best Buy as a Customer Service Specialist, but allowed time for a short vacation to Austin with her family, including fellow SFF Scholars and sisters Alexis and Warnessa. Together they went hiking, jet skiing, and tubing. By the time August came around she was eager to hit the books again!
Angie is taking 12 credit hours this semester in addition to volunteering again at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Not only does this opportunity provide her with valuable medical experience, but it allows her to help others, which is her primary passion.
“Today I walk down the path of life and look for the good in all things regardless to the circumstances. You see, no matter the road traveled in life, I will do the right thing to help others along the way. Yes, I do need your help to pursue a higher education, and prayerfully I, too can inspire others the way they have inspired and blessed me.”
How does Angie relax after a long day of work, volunteering, or class? She loves unwinding with the TV show Swamp People! In addition, since she was a young girl, she has always had a fascination for working with cars and enjoys learning about them, especially foreign cars.
Angie grew up in Galveston and was an outstanding volunteer for the Johnny Mitchell Boys and Girls Club and The Steve Francis Foundation. She mentored and tutored elementary, middle and high school youth with homework assignments, science projects, and TAKS testing. Angie believes in the importance of teaching youth about self-respect and showing respect to others and makes sure the youth around her know this.
“Angie provides leadership and is definitely a positive role model for the entire Club. She demonstrates positive self esteem and is committed to helping Club members become a productive part of society. She shows concern when listening and communicates on a level that each child can understand. She is truly a gem.” -Cheryl Chatman, Club Director
Angie’s positivity and kindness are a blessing to the Foundation and we wish her the best this academic year!
