Michelle’s motivation in life has always been to help people and she has found that satisfaction through teaching, science, and community involvement. Michelle Sanders graduated from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Biology in 2009. While at Amherst she was a Bonner Leader of Amherst College Center for Community Engagement Leader Program and organized workshops, created new partnerships, and helped prepare the budget for the program. Michelle would also tutor high school students two hours a week through Amherst’s A Better Chance Mentoring and Tutoring Program.
I felt that my community made me who I am today and that I owe it to everyone in my community to give back and help someone else succeed, which happens to be exactly what this scholarship did to me. –Michelle Sanders-Limonthas
She moved back to Houston after graduating from Amherst and began teaching to high school students where she went to high school, Harmony Science Academy. Michelle then got involved with HIBSA to help the program launch. HIBSA is a 4-year program of study immersed in STEM studies and learning experiences designed to prepare our students for successful career in healthcare professions. The program prepares students for college level studies and for those interested in a career in the medical field.
Michelle volunteered at the 13th Annual Holiday Extravaganza on December 21st and brought several of her students to help. She wanted her students to realize what the impact of volunteering can have on others as well as themselves. We are very proud of her leadership and service. Michelle’s need to help others originated from her involvement of over 9 years with Hothouse Boys and Girls Club. She proved to be very responsible and goal-oriented individual, with her number one focus always on education.
As one of our inaugural Scholarship Recipients, Michelle has proven to be a positive influence on others and continued to work hard for her family and career.
