A 2007 Recipient, Warnessa Freeman graduated in May of 2011 from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information and Operations Management with a concentration in Management and Information Systems. Since graduation she has been working for Hewlett-Packard as an IT Engineer.
Warnessa was recently promoted to IT Engineer II and works on the SAP logistics AMS team at Hewlett-Packard. The goal of the Logistics development team is to strengthen HP’s delivery process for the Americas region and implement new flows and communication links for new products between HP and their third party logistics partners. Currently, Warnessa holds a position in one of HP’s largest projects and works alternate hours in order to work efficiently with the project’s counterparts in Shanghai and India.
Work and taking care of her precious shih tzu Taz keeps Warnessa very busy. She volunteers with other Hewlett-Packard managers to plan company charity events and social functions that help bring the company closer together. Toy drives and bowling tournaments are a few of the events the group has organized.
She manages to find time to travel in between her busy work schedule and visited Seattle, New York City, and Jamaica this past year. Warnessa enjoys learning about the different cultures and finding differences in ways of life amongst others. Another fun fact we discovered about Warnessa last June was that her friends call her the human jukebox because she will quickly learn the lyrics to any song she hears and can recite the lyrics at any moment!
When we first met Warnessa as a member of the Johnny Mitchell Boys and Girls Club, we were captured by her leadership and dedication qualities. The Johnny Mitchell Branch Boys and Girls Club has been a part of her life for more than fourteen years, starting as a member and then becoming a volunteer to mentor and tutor the other youth. As a senior at Ball High School, she won the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston Youth of the Year award. Warnessa also served as the captain of the varsity volleyball team, a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and BESTT- student teaching organization.
Continuing her passion of helping and educating others, Warnessa tutored elementary students while juggling her college classes at Texas A&M University. She also had the incredible opportunity to intern for NASA’s Space Engineering Institute college program. Outside of work and school, Warnessa served as a Peer Advisor, Director of Operations of MEDALS, Associate Director of the Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference, and helped organize an educational and leadership conference held annually at Texas A&M for high school students. The conference hosted over five hundred high school students and Warnessa enjoyed providing guidance and advice about her college life to the participants.
Warnessa’s passion and leadership qualities are also seen in her two sisters, Alexis and Angie DeWalt, who are part of the SFF Scholar Family. The three young ladies have been wonderful additions to our Scholarship Program and we look forward to following their paths for years to come.
